Big Mountain Clean Up 2026 - Kilimanjaro

Cleaning the roof of Africa

Protecting The Peaks

Mount Kilimanjaro is not just the highest peak in Africa. It’s a symbol of endurance and natural beauty. But the iconic “Roof of Africa” is in danger.

Every year, tens of thousands of trekkers flock to Kilimanjaro seeking adventure. Yet, left behind are thousands of kilograms of plastic, food waste, discarded gear, and human waste. This growing environmental crisis is threatening the very soul of the mountain.

It’s time to act. ‘Clean Kilimanjaro’ is a bold, high-impact initiative to restore, protect, and preserve this majestic mountain, and empower those who know it best to lead the change.

Why This Matters

Environmental Challenge: With an estimated 50,000 visitors to Kilimanjaro annually, it is clear that, with even positive local steps to remove waste, the levels of waste left remain a significant problem.  This pollution endangers wildlife, contaminates water sources, and scars the landscape.

A Sacred Legacy: Kilimanjaro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Protecting it safeguards biodiversity, climate stability, and cultural heritage.

Porters Without Work: Outside peak trekking seasons, many mountain porters face unemployment and hardship. This initiative creates fair, dignified off-season work, cleaning the very mountain they help people climb.

Our Vision: A clean Kilimanjaro for all

We are seeking to raise £20,000, which we will add to the £10,000 already raised, to clean Kilimanjaro as part of our Big Mountain Clean Up campaign.  A desire to see waste reduction, removal, responsible tourism and local empowerment to clean these incredible places.

Our Core Goals:

  1. Restore Kilimanjaro’s environment through a structured waste clean-up expeditions led by trained local teams.
  2. Employ and fairly pay mountain porters during the off-season to conduct Trash Treks, providing stable income and skills training.
  3. Engage trekkers and tourists with eco-conscious treks that combine summit goals with environmental impact.
  4. Educate local communities, guides, and tour operators to reduce waste at the source and adopt sustainable practices.
  5. Inspire change.

The Impact We Can Make

- The removal of tonnes of waste from the mountain.

- Experienced porters trained and employed during low seasons.

- Hundreds of global trekkers turned into environmental ambassadors.

- A scalable model to clean and protect this threatened trekking destination.

This is about more than litter. It’s about respect for nature, for people, for future generations.
