Project Odyssey

Veteran rehabilitation and adventure therapy

The rehabilitative good of the natural environment

Founder Nimsdai Purja spent 16 years in the military as both a Gurkha and in the UK Special Forces. During that time, he was inspired by the bravery, courage and camaraderie he experienced.  It also made him all-too aware of the hardship many veterans face after leaving the military, whether that’s dealing with life-changing physical injuries, or grappling with mental health issues like post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Nimsdai Foundation provides supported treks to enhance the well-being of former members of the Armed Forces and others experiencing physical or psychological injuries or mental health conditions. These treks allow those attending to evaluate their lives, help tackle and overcome deeper issues and benefit from the rehabilitative force for good that these environments provide.

Time and again, studies have proven that being in nature and hiking can help in the healing process, giving veterans and those struggling with a renewed sense of purpose, a chance to put their specialist skills to use, and the opportunity to operate as part of a team.

Why mountains matter

Project Odyssey is designed to support UK Armed Forces veterans facing psychological and physical challenges after their military service. These individuals, often struggling with mental health conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, or depression, or adjusting to life with physical injuries, are given the chance to rediscover purpose and resilience through the project.

The project provides rehabilitative mountain treks, such as a full Kilimanjaro expedition, combined with tailored wellbeing support before, during, and after the journey. Working with Southampton University students, we have created 'North Star'. This assessment tool allows us to work closely with participants to understand their personal circumstances and challenges, establishing a baseline of their physical and emotional wellbeing. Along with testimonial feedback, this allows us to capture quantitative data on the impact these treks have on those who take part. It also provides the participant with an action plan to take forward.

During the expedition, veterans benefit from expert guidance, a safe space for reflection, and the powerful rehabilitative impact of the mountain environment. Post-trek, follow-up assessments and support help ensure sustained improvements.

A Project Odyssey Veteran

I will forever be grateful to the Nimsdai Foundation and its generous donors for making this possible, and to my teammates and guides for reminding me what true camaraderie looks like. This expedition wasn’t just a climb — it was a life-shaping experience."
