In some places in Western Nepal the traditional practise of Chhaupadi is continued. This is where menstruating women and girls are considered impure and are banished from their homes during their periods. This impacts women and girls’ education and ability to work, leading to gender-inequality.
Did you know?
- 83% of girls in rural Nepal report missing school during their period.
- Many have no access to sanitary products or basic menstrual knowledge.
- Cultural taboos isolate women, sometimes forcing them to sleep outside.
- Lack of information and understanding from men fosters continued stigma and silence.
- Project Shakti ensures access, awareness, and agency for every girl and woman, so that menstruation never stands in the way of their education or dignity.
By working with and empowering the women and girls of the community, we can work together for a brighter future for all.
