Project Odyssey for World Mental Health Day 2025

On the Mountains, Minds Heal

Every year, World Mental Health Day (October 10th) reminds us how vital it is to care for our minds as well as our bodies. For veterans, that journey to recovery takes many forms, but time and again studies have shown the importance of the healing power of nature, challenge and camaraderie.

That’s the idea behind the Nimsdai Foundation’s Project Odyssey; a rehabilitative trekking programme that takes former members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces on supported treks designed to rebuild both mental and physical wellbeing.

This August, a group of veterans climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. It was a challenge that pushed limits, tested endurance and reignited a sense of camaraderie that many had missed since leaving service.

The Rehabilitative Good of the Natural Environment

Founder Nimsdai Purja knows first-hand how nature and challenge can heal. After sixteen years in the military, including service in the UK Special Forces, he saw how courage and brotherhood can endure; but also how many veterans struggle once that structure is gone.

Through Project Odyssey, the Nimsdai Foundation has created a way to give back to those who’ve served. The treks allow participants to reflect, confront deeper issues and rediscover strength through shared experience.

Time in nature has been proven again and again to reduce stress, improve mood and support long-term mental health recovery. For many who join, these expeditions become a turning point – a chance to process trauma and find balance again.
