Thame Village appeal
Thame and its neighbouring Thameteng (upper Thame) are small Sherpa villages in Namche Bazaar area of the Solukhumbu District in Nepal.
On Friday, August 16th 2024, a rare climatic event unleashed catastrophic flooding and landslides on Thame Village. Triggered by an outburst from a Glacial Lake linked to rising temperatures and heavy rainfall, the floodwater surged down with mud and debris, severely affecting around 50% of Thame Village. Structures lost included a school, a clinical centre, several houses, and a hotel, assets essential to the community’s welfare and tourism economy. The people of Thame faced unimaginable challenges.
The area is on the Everest Base Camp Trail, but is still remote and so emergency aid was hard to deliver to the area. Thanks to the generosity of the Nimsdai Foundation community, our disaster relief fundraiser was a huge success.
Working with a local NGO, Bighnaharta Nepal, the Nimsdai Foundation was able to provide furniture and building materials for the Thame Learning Centre, located in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality.
- 60 sheets of plywood to help with the rebuild of the classrooms and hostels
- 20 desks
- 20 benches
- 10 tables and chairs
- 30 beds, mattresses and sleep essentials such as pillowcases and blankets
Thanks to the generosity of the Nimsdai Foundation community, the Thame Village Appeal was able to help the Sherpa community rebuild their school and support the community while they rebuilt their homes.
